Sixty years ago today, President Dwight Eisenhower became the first voice “beamed” into space. His pre-recorded message was broadcast throughout the world from the SCORE satellite (Signal Communication by Orbiting Relay). SCORE launched atop an Atlas B rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida December 18, 1958.

This mission played an important role in the U.S.’s efforts toward the space race. Not only was it the first communications satellite, but it also demonstrated that an Atlas rocket could be launched into low Earth orbit after several failed attempts.

One day after launch, December 19, Eisenhower’s Christmas message was broadcast:

“This is the President of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance, my voice is coming to you via a satellite circling in outer space. My message is a simple one: Through this unique means I convey to you and all mankind, America’s wish for peace on Earth and goodwill toward men everywhere.”
