"I can't think of a single job I'd rather have - in this world or out of it." - John Young
A true American hero, John W. Young, has passed away. On Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 12:00 PM, please join us in remembering astronaut John Young. There will be a brief ceremony outside Heroes & Legends, honoring his life and accomplishments. All guests are welcome.
Not only was Young a Gemini commander and Apollo astronaut who walked on the moon in 1972, he became Chief of the Astronaut Office in 1973 and was also commander of the first space shuttle flight, STS-1, in 1981. Young's singular dedication to the American space program spanned three programs and 42 years with NASA. After retirement in 2004, Young continued advocacy for the development of technology to allow humans to live on the moon and Mars.
Watch astronaut Mike McCulley tell a story about one of the many conversations he had with John Young.
