Robotic Refueling Mission 3 (RRM3) Exhibit

What are cryogenic fluids? Why are they important for deep space travel?

Satellites need different supplies that help them preform their key functions once they leave this planet. But what happens when those supplies run out hundreds or thousands of miles away from our planet? Robotic Refueling Mission 3, or RRM3, will soon launch aboard CRS-16 and researches new methods to service satellites during long duration travel. This includes storing, transferring and even freezing standard cryogenic fluid in space. Cryogenic fluid is needed for deep space travel as it keeps critical equipment cool and operating properly. Cryogenic fluids also include propellant, needed to break out of planetary body’s gravitational pull, and liquid oxygen, essential for human life support systems.

From November 29 – December 3, interact with the RRM3 mission launching aboard CRS-16 by visiting the following displays in Space Shuttle Atlantis®:

  • Drive a 3D printed robotic arm with Xbox controllers, and practice picking up blocks.
  • See a miniature model of the Landsat 7 satellite.
  • Get up close to VIPIR, a tool similar to what will be used on RRM3.
  • Take home fact sheets and giveaways from the mission.

Plus, do not miss a daily discussion about the mission. Located at the exhibits, learn about RRM3 from the experts during a 15 minute overview, and question and answer session.
