NASA初代主任天文学者であり、「ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡の母」とも称されるナンシー・グレース・ローマンにちなんで名付けられた「ナンシー・グレース・ローマン宇宙望遠鏡」は、ハッブルの少なくとも100倍の視野を持ち、その運用期間中に10億個もの銀河からの光を測定できる可能性があります。 また、この観測施設は、恒星の光を遮断して系外惑星や惑星形成円盤を直接観測したり、銀河系内の惑星系に関する統計的な調査を完了させたり、ダークエネルギー、系外惑星、赤外線天体物理学の分野における重要な疑問を解明したりすることも可能となる。
