On April 12, 1981 launch, from Pad 39A, space shuttle Columbia carried astronaut John Young and Robert Crippen on the first space shuttle mission.

40th Anniversary of STS-1

Honor the first flight of the Space Shuttle Program. From April 12 through 15, visit Space Shuttle Atlantis ® to learn more about the program that returned America to flight after completing the Apollo-era missions. On the ground floor, view astronauts Bob Crippen and John Young's flight suits, the crew of the STS-1 mission. As you view these artifacts, hear stories about these pioneering astronauts and their historical mission.
